Whether you’re a teacher, a parent, or student, one of the richest currencies we have is trust. Think about it: the person you felt comfortable hanging out with, the one you would could be vulnerable with, that person you knew you could count on made those things happen by building trust with you.
In my experience, the number one way you build trust with those you are leading is by demonstrating respect. In times past, there was an attitude of, “I’m the teacher and you’re the student; sit down and listen to what I say and don’t say a word.” However, what we have learned is that the student may become compliant, but they do not respect a person who treats them this way, nor are they very open to new learning.
Thus, in our relationships, we must build a connection with mutual trust. Trust is the currency we use between each other to build strong bonds and make beautiful, lasting memories with each other. One of the ways that I like to build trust is to genuinely listen to others and apologize when I make a mistake.
